How to reach Ladakh?

You can make your Ladakh trip in two different ways. One is Ladakh by Road or Ladakh Road trip and another is Ladakh by Flights.
If you an adventure lover, then definitely you can choose the Ladakh road trip. This road trip you can do by your own car, rental cabs or by Buses. The road to Ladakh is very adventurous and you will find all the beautiful scenarios during your Ladakh Road trip.
Another option will be a good choice if you don’t have too much time for this trip. You can directly get Delhi to Ladakh flight. Ladakh Airport is a beautiful place. 

PLACES TO VISIT  ON THE WAY TO LADAKH during Ladakh road trip

During the Ladakh road trip, we found some beautiful places to visit. These are listing below…

Chenani Nashri Tunnel:

Chenani Nashri tunnel is the longest tunnel in India and its length is 9.28 km. This also called Dr.Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel. It is located on Jammu-Srinagar Highway at Patnitop. It opened for traffic in April 2017.


Dal lake is located at Srinagar beside the Pir Panjal mountains. The lake is Jewel of Srinagar. It covered around 15 km by a vast sheet of water. It’s an isolated beauty in Kashmir Valley. Here we can found the famous houseboat. Local people use this boat for transporting goods to the market, children to school. For tourists, these houseboats use for skiff around the lake which is called Shikara ride.


Sonamarg is a beautiful destination in Kashmir Valley. During  the Ladakh Road trip, we can explore two famous spots near the Sonamarg market is Yusmarg and Thajiwas Glacier

Zoji – LA Pass:

Zoji La is a high-altitude pass between Kashmir valley and Drass valley. It is situated at an altitude of 11650 feet. The pass is the second highest pass in Kashmir valley. Also, it’s very important to pass which connects Kasmir to Leh by road. This pass will give you some hackle during your Ladakh Road trip.

Mulbekh Monastery:

Mulbekh monastery is located in Kargil Valley. The two major sects of Buddhism, Drukpa and Gelugpa had two gompas in the Mulbekh monastery. The nine-meter statue of Maitreya Buddha or Future buddha placed here.

Kargil War Memorial:

This is one of the important attractions during the Ladakh Road trip.Kargil war memorial located in the Drass sector. The memorial is built to honor the soldiers who fought bravely in the Kargil War against Pakistan. The whole memorial is the Sandstone wall, in the open, which has the names of all the Indian army personnel who laid their lives during the Kargil War.


Leh Palace:

  Leh Palace is located in Leh City on the Namgyal hilltop. It is a top place in this city. Basically, Leh palace is a former Royal Palace and was constructed circa 1600 by Sengge Namgyal. The Place is a nine stories building were on the upper floors that accommodated the royal family. Also, Leh Palace is known as “Lachen Palkhar”. The main attraction at this Palace is its museum. In this museum, we found a rich collection of jewelry, ornaments, ceremonial dresses, and crowns. It also holds some of the Chinese paintings which are more than 450 years old. The Palace provides views of Stok Kangri and the Mountains.

Hall of Fame:

Hall of fame is located beside Leh-Kargil Highway and a distance of about 4 km from Leh city. Hall of raming is a two stories army museum constructed By the Indian Army in memory of the Indian army who laid down their lives in Indo Pak wars. The museum holds some kinds of weapons captured by the Indian army during the War. Here displayed a documentary on “Operation Vijay”. This is also a must visited place during your Ladakh road trip.

Gurudwara Pathar Sahib:

Gurudwara Pathar Sahib is located 25 km away from the city. Once Guru Nanak Ji was meditating here and a demon had thrown a big rock to obstruct his payers but the boulder turned into soft wax that failed to harm him. The boulder with the imprint of the body of the Guru Nanak Dev display in this Place.

Shanti Stupa:

Shanti Stupa is a Buddhist Monestry built by the Japanese Buddhist Organization and inaugurated by Dalai Lama in 1985. It is located 5 km away from Leh city and surrounded by snow-capped Ladakh ranges mountains. It was built by the Organization to celebrate the completion of 2500 years of   Buddism. It also a Sunrise and sunset viewpoint in Leh.

Magnetic Hill:

Magnetic Hill located 30 km away from Leh city beside Leh-Kargil Highway. The main attraction is this hill Pull back the vehicles. Here if you turned off your car engine, it will slowly start moving uphill and go up to the speed of 20-25 km/hrs on its own. When you will do the Ladakh road trip from Delhi, this place will be on the way.

Khardung la Pass

Khardungla Pass:

Khardung la Pass is the world’s highest Motorable Pass. It is situated at an altitude of 18379 feet. If we Plan for Nubra Valley and Shyok, then this pass is the Gateway. In summers time, the temperature goes up to 20’c and in wintertime, it covered by up to 10’ hight of snow. The pass is located at a distance of about 40 km from Leh city. We found fresh snow here during our Ladakh road trip.

Thiksey Monastery:

Thiksey The monastery is located 20 km away from Leh city, beside the Indus River on a hilltop. It’s a Buddhist monastery where we found a Buddha statue. From September 17thto 19th, “GUstor Ritual” festivals host here every year. During the festival, local people performed the Mask dance.

Diskit Monastery:

Diskit monastery located in Hunder, on Leh-Nubra road. The main attraction is a gigantic statue of Lord Buddha on the top of the hill. From here we can see the beautiful valley of Hunder.


Nubra Valley

Nubra Valley:

Nubra valley is a mysterious Valley located in Hunder. Here we found Sand dunes, a monastery, and a beautiful green Nubra village. Nubra valley is famous for The Bactrian camel rides in the desert. The camel has two Humps and was the primary source of transportation in the silk route.

Pangong Tso Lake

Pangong Tso Lake:

Pagong is a famous high altitude lake in Leh. The lake is 12 km long and extends from India to China. The temperatures move around -5’c to 10’c.In winter, the lake is completely frozen. Pangong Tso lake is also known to change colors, appearing Blue, Gray, green, red at different times of a Day. The Best part of the visit to Pangong lake is Lake-side Camping. It’s an amazing experience to spend nights in Camp, beside Pangong.  We can do some of the funny activities here, which inspired by The Indian movie “Three Idiots “.

Tso Moriri lake:

Tso moriri Lake is one of the best Ladakh lake and it is located in the Changthang region in Ladakh. It also a beautiful high altitude lake in India. The lake is 7 km wide and 19 km long.

Chang La Pass:

Changla Pass is the 3rd highest motorable pass in the world.It the most dangerous pass. The pass is about 15 km long and the roads are very steep. Here we can found Changla Baba Temple. Here we stuck some time because of bad road condition during our Ladakh road trip.

Hemis Monastery:

Hemis is the Biggest and Richest monastery in Leh. It’s a Buddhist Monastery and it’s surrounded by Buddhist prayer flags. One of the famous Hemis festivals hosts here every year. It’s a two days festival and it marks the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava. During this festival, the beautiful local handicrafts are displays here and the lama’s dance around the central flagpole to the tune of Drums, longhorn, and cymbals.

Leh & Ladakh Road trip Itinerary

 For our Ladakh trip from Delhi to Ladakh, is the Gateway of this trip. So we will plan from Delhi to Delhi. (Delhi to Ladakh distance is about 1150 km.)

DAY 1:    DELHI ( NH44)   TO   PATNITOP. (654KMS)…………12 hrs

                     START AT 5 AM  AND END AT 5-6 PM

DAY 2:    PATNITOP  TO SONAMARG (278 km)….8-9 hrs..7 am -4 Pm

DAY 3   :    SONAMARG  TO   LEH….217 kms….4 / 5 hrs.

Note: If you want to travel from Manali to Leh, then this plan will be reversed. Manali to Ladakh distance is about 470 km
